September 2022 Grand Sumo Tournament, Day 15 (Sunday 25 September 2022)

(Looking for a different day? Try the master list!)

Compiled from: NSK's postings for makuuchi, juryo, makushita, sandanme, jonidan and jonokuchi; NSK's absence list, NSK's tournament leader list, NSK's tournament champions list and NSK's Day 15 program in Japanese.

There are 120 bouts listed on the schedule today. It's an odd-numbered day which means the east side is first to get called.

Yusho races

Makuuchi is undecided! The current leader is Tamawashi, with Takayasu one win behind. Guess who's scheduled to bout tomorrow...

If Tamawashi wins his second championship, he'll be the oldest top division yusho winner ever.

If Takayasu wins, it'll be the former ozeki's first ever yusho after some agonisingly close calls. Tayakasu fans will no doubt be partying until November.

Tamawashi's infamous kotenage against Takayasu was responsible for injuring Takayasu's elbow when he was an ozeki, causing him to lose a lot of fighting power and arguably his ozeki rank. Any match between these two is always spicy, let alone when it's for the yusho!

Lower divisions were mostly decided on Day 13 (jonokuchi, sandanme, makushita). Jonidan is going to a Day 15 playoff.

Darwin matches (7-7 matches on Senshuraku)

Makuuchi (3) : Oho vs Ura, Kotoshoho vs Meisei, Endo vs Hoshoryu. Hiradoumi also hangs in the balance.

Juryo (4): Kotokuzan vs Oshoma, Akua vs Tokushoryu, Hidenoumi vs Kaisho, Daiamami vs Bushozan. Chiyosakae also hangs in the balance.

Curiosities: that time half a stable went AWOL because the stablemaster's wife was being too harsh on them.
