July 2022 Grand Sumo Tournament, Day 10 (Tuesday 19 July 2022)
(Looking for a different day? Try the master list!)
Compiled from: NSK's postings for makuuchi, juryo, makushita, sandanme, jonidan and jonokuchi; NSK's absence list, NSK's leader list and NSK's Day 10 program in Japanese.
There are 149 bouts listed on the schedule today. It's an even-numbered day which means the west side is first on the schedule and first to get called.
Special kyujo notices
There's a covid outbreak in progress in Grand Sumo! Entire heya, gyoji, shimpan and yobidashi are all going kyujo due to covid at the rate of at least one a day. This schedule and even the official schedule are a best-case-scenario guide only.
Entire stables of rikishi are being progressively withdrawn from competition due to positive covid results, with some shimpan, gyoji and yobidashi going kyujo along with them. Stables currently affected:
For absent rikishi, see NSK's absence list. It is a long list.
Absent gyoji: Kimura Shomei (jonokuchi/jonidan), Kimura Chishu (makushita); Kimura Shiho; Shikimori Shinnosuke (juryo). Kimura Keitaro (jonidan) may be absent tomorrow.
Absent yobidashi: Kenta (in jonidan); Satoru (makushita); Kotozo (makuuchi).
Absent shimpan: Naruto, with Shiranui (komusubi Wakakoyu) taking his spot; Hanaregoma, with Minato (maegashira 2 Minatofuji) returning to shimpan duty in his place.
Tournament leaders and tiebreaker matches
Check NSK's tournament leader list for details.
There's no tiebreaker matches on the schedule today. Nobody has made their kk in juryo or makuuchi yet, and makuuchi has many more co-leaders than juryo. (It's really meant to be the other way around...)
Division leaders are highlighted in bold.

We have the same shimpan as May 2022!

Who's that yobidashi? (And how's their singing?)
Yobidashi prior to the juryo-ranked yobidashi (Soichi) aren't listed on the daily program.
I record non-sekitori yobidashi after Jin on the program as the day goes on, then I update this file with predictions once the schedule locks in.
Fan favourite Shintaro did not appear during the first four days of the tournament!
Images and bios for off-schedule yobidashi
The official program only lists sekitori yobidashi from Soichi onwards. Even after their match-calling shifts, these youngsters work throughout the day as attendants.
There's a gallery of yobidashi headshots with bios at Heyaaz - it's missing Jin because he debuted during 2022.
To help spot them, here's links to screencaps of the non-sekitori yobidashi, including onscreen bios in Japanese:
- Jin (newish, sings somewhat off-key)
- Takeru (sings a little off-key, a fan favourite for his occasional spectacular vocal cracks)
- Yuma (changes key mid-call, one for the microtonal jazz fans)
- Kenta (an unfancy but solid style - hits the notes and sings clearly)
- Hiroshi (not the best singer, doesn't stay in tune)
- Yuji (sings a bit off key, also must remember to hydrate!)
- Hiromasa (does a neat flippy move with his fan, a decent singer to boot!)
- Tsurutaro (sings a bit flat)
- Shigejiro (a fan favourite! the best non-sekitori singer & the main reason the yobidashi predictions exist)
- Shin (pretty good singer but tends to go flat the longer he sings a note, needs to hydrate)
- Naoki (goes a little flat towards the end but overall a good enough singer with a curious high-pitched tone)
- Setsuo (an unspectactular but solid singer)
- Yuto (a solid singer with good use of vibrato)
- Kohei (solid enough singer, does the upward glissando)
- Shunsuke (an acquired taste - loud and poorly enunciated singing which always cheers me up but reportedly annoys any cats within earshot)
- Mamoru (a competent singer, distinctively fades volume around syllable breaks - some claim he's seriously underrated!)
- Teruya (a good singer with a soulful vocal tone and good melisma skills)
