July 2022 Grand Sumo Tournament, Day 9 (Monday 18 July 2022)
(Looking for a different day? Try the master list!)
Compiled from: NSK's postings for makuuchi, juryo, makushita, sandanme, jonidan and jonokuchi; NSK's absence list, NSK's leader list and NSK's Day 9 program in Japanese.
There are 151 bouts listed on the schedule today. It's an odd-numbered day which means the east side is first on the schedule and first to get called.
Start is 10 minutes later today.
Special kyujo notices
There's a covid outbreak in progress in Grand Sumo right now, so don't rely on the yobidashi and gyoji schedule for today too closely! Because of enforced absences, the schedule is changing quicker than they're able to publish it!
With the withdrawal of even more gyoji and yobidashi, partly due to covid tests being positive amongst Dewanoumi stable (day 7) and now Naruto stable (pulled out for day 8) and now Hanaregoma stable (pulled out for day 9) the gyoji & yobidashi buddies on the schedule are different to how they were previously partnered up on previous days.
Gyoji who have disappeared from today's schedule: Kimura Shomei (usually on second during jonokuchi/jonidan), Kimura Chishu (usually on during makushita) of Dewanoumi stable; Kimura Shiho from Sadogatake stable. Hanaregoma has two sekitori gyoji who may also go absent today: Shikimori Kindayu in makuuchi and Shikimori Shinnosuke in makushita joi.
Yobidashi confirmed absent: Kenta (usually seen in jonidan).
Naruto is also kyujo as part of his stable being isolated because of a covid outbreak. He'll be replaced ringside by Shiranui (komusubi Wakakoyu). Hanaregoma is also absent for the same reason, with Kataonami sitting in for him.
All Dewanoumi and Naruto rikishi have been pulled out of competition, including kadoban ozeki Mitakeumi and shin-juryo Oshoma.
Tournament leaders.
- Juryo is co-led on 6-2 by Hokuseiho, Hiradoumi and some other guy.
- Jonokuchi co-leaders are Takataisho and Takahashi. They are scheduled to bout in match number 3!
The other divisions are still sorting themselves out - yet again, seemingly half of makuuchi is sharing 6-2. I will put in mini-reports once there are a sensible number of co-leaders. For now, division leaders will be bolded.

Members of this senior group join up with other shimpan groups to act as head shimpan after the juryo ring entrance ceremony & intermission.
Who's that yobidashi? (And how's their singing?)
Yobidashi prior to the juryo-ranked yobidashi (Soichi) aren't listed on the daily program.
I record non-sekitori yobidashi after Jin on the program as the day goes on, then I update this file with predictions once the schedule locks in.
Fan favourite Shintaro did not appear during the first four days of the tournament!
Images and bios for off-schedule yobidashi
The official program only lists sekitori yobidashi from Soichi onwards. Even after their match-calling shifts, these youngsters work throughout the day as attendants.
There's a gallery of yobidashi headshots with bios at Heyaaz - it's missing Jin because he debuted during 2022.
To help spot them, here's links to screencaps of the non-sekitori yobidashi, including onscreen bios in Japanese:
- Jin (newish, sings somewhat off-key)
- Takeru (sings a little off-key, a fan favourite for his occasional spectacular vocal cracks)
- Yuma (changes key mid-call, one for the microtonal jazz fans)
- Kenta (an unfancy but solid style - hits the notes and sings clearly)
- Hiroshi (not the best singer, doesn't stay in tune)
- Yuji (sings a bit off key, also must remember to hydrate!)
- Hiromasa (does a neat flippy move with his fan, a decent singer to boot!)
- Tsurutaro (sings a bit flat)
- Shigejiro (a fan favourite! the best non-sekitori singer & the main reason the yobidashi predictions exist)
- Shin (pretty good singer but tends to go flat the longer he sings a note, needs to hydrate)
- Naoki (goes a little flat towards the end but overall a good enough singer with a curious high-pitched tone)
- Setsuo (an unspectactular but solid singer)
- Yuto (a solid singer with good use of vibrato)
- Kohei (solid enough singer, does the upward glissando)
- Shunsuke (an acquired taste - loud and poorly enunciated singing which always cheers me up but reportedly annoys any cats within earshot)
- Mamoru (a competent singer, distinctively fades volume around syllable breaks - some claim he's seriously underrated!)
- Teruya (a good singer with a soulful vocal tone and good melisma skills)
On-schedule yobidashi
These yobidashi are listed on the Japanese schedule due to being ranked as juryo, makuuchi or sanyaku yobidashi.
- Soichi (strident nasal tone, notes flatten the longer he holds them)
- Yohei (tuneful and clear singer)
- Keisuke (a fan favourite for his dishy looks; does the upward glissando a bit and sings slightly flat & honky)
- Fujio (tuneful singer with some subdued melisma)
- Shigetaro (tuneful singer with ok-ish melisma)
- Tasuke (does the upward glissando, note flattens the longer he holds it though)
- Satoru (sings a bit soft and also very slightly flat)
- Masao (unfancy style, good volume, good enough pitch)
- Rokuro (not the prettiest fellow but a decent singer)
- Hiroyuki (a minor fan favourite with unique vibrato)
- Matsuo (solid and unfancy, gets on with it)
- Kunio (a definite fan favourite! unique baritone and sustain with virtuoso control of his harmonics, breathtakingly good)
- Mitsuaki (an ok singer who gives some notes noticeably more oomph than others)
- Rikinojo (an audience favourite for his movie star looks and fancy hair; sings with a high nasal pitch and badly overcooked upward glissando, often compared to an air raid siren by his detractors)
- Koji (high pitched nasal timbre but a more measured use of glissando, has fancier hair than Rikinojo)
- Teruki (a good no-nonsense singer)
- Daikichi
- Kotoyoshi
- Kotozo
- Ryuji
- Akira
- Kokichi
- Goro
- Shigeo (soulful and tuneful style)
- Shiro
- Katsuyuki
- Jiro
