Tournament championship race
Congratulations to the following yusho winners!
- Makushita: Oshoma
- Sandanme: Kamitani
As for the rest of the divisions: Chaos, "May 2022 Basho" is thy name. Matches for leaders and hunters (one off the pace) are highlighted in bold.
Makuuchi sitrep
Terunofuji & Takanosho are tied for the lead at 11-3, with Daieisho and Sadanoumi one off the pace at 10-4.
- If both Takanosho and Terunofuji win, a playoff happens between them. Takanosho lost to Sadanoumi...
- If either Takanosho or Terunofuji wins and the other loses, it's a yusho. ...and Teru won against Mita...
- If both Takanosho and Terunofuji lose, it goes to a playoff between them and whoever wins out of Daieisho and Sadanoumi. Sadanoumi is up against Takanosho today, so if Sadanoumi takes that match, the chaos begins.. ...so we avoided chaos.
Juryo sitrep
Tsurugisho, Daiamami and Nishikifuji are out the front on 10-4. Ryuden, Tokushoryu, Asanowaka, Atamifuji, Churanoumi are right behind them on 9-5.
- If there's only one winner out of Tsurugisho, Daiamami and Nishikifuji, yusho! Didn't happen
- If Tsurugisho, Daiamami and Nishikifuji all win, they have a playoff. Daiamami and Nishikifuji won their matches, so it went to a playoff. Nishikigi won.
- If Tsurugisho, Daiamami and Nishikifuji all lose, there's also a playoff between the three of them plus whoever wins their match out of Ryuden, Tokushoryu, Asanowaka, Atamifuji and Churanoumi. This was avoided.
Lower division playoffs
- Jonidan: Kototebakari v Hanafusa. Hanafusa won
- Jonokuchi: Playoff between Kazekeno, Yamato, Arise and Tanji. Tanji lost to Kazekeno, Arise lost to Yamato, Kazekeno did not fall victim to Yamato's ashitori.
Sansho prize winners
Prizes are given in up to three categories.
- Outstanding Performance (Shukunsho): Daieisho and Takanosho
- Fighting Spirit (Kantosho): Sadanoumi
- Technique Prize (Ginosho): Not awarded
Who's that shimpan (ringside judge)?
Thanks to the maintainer of this page for providing these images! Click the name of the shimpan to see what they look like. (You may need to middle-click it to open the link in a new window.)
Today, the fifth shimpan in the list is on the mic for the pre-sekitori shifts. That said, the Tatekawa group hasn't being following their listed order since Hatachiyama began subbing for Futagoyama so the first we'll know for sure is when they sit down.
- "on mic" is the head shimpan (shimpancho) with their back to the audience (shomen)
- "east side" is facing the dohyo from TV screen left (higashi)
- "timekeeper" is facing us (mukojomen) on the east side of the gyoji under the red tassle (akabusa) (TV screen left)
- "facing" is facing us (mukojomen) on the west of the gyoji under the white tassle (shirobusa) (TV screen right)
- "west side" is facing the dohyo from TV screen right (nishi)
Shimpan groups
Each group below has at least one shift every day. The starter group gets the rest of the day off, while the other groups do two shifts each: the first one has everyone listed below, and the second with one of their number substituted for one of the senior group. (There's a whole rota system.)
- Asakayama group: Asakayama (ozeki Kaio), Takenawa (sekiwake Tochinonada), Edagawa (maegashira 1 Aogiyama), Sendagawa (komusubi Toki) Nishonoseki (yokozuna Kisenosato)
- Tatekawa group: Tatekawa (sekiwake Tosanoumi), Hanaregoma (sekiwake Tamanoshima), Hatachiyama (komusubi Tochinohana), Oshima (sekiwake Kyokutenho), Takasago (ozeki Asasekiryu)
- Onaruto group: Onaruto (ozeki Dejima), Urakaze (maegashira 1 Shikishima), Asahiyama (sekiwake Kotonishiki), Tanigawa (sekiwake Hokutoriki), Naruto (ozeki Kotooshu)
- Kataonami group: Kataonami (sekiwake Tamakasuga), Tamagaki (komusubi Tomonohana), Azumazeki (komusubi Takamisakari), Tokitsukaze (maegashira 1 Tosayutaka), Ikazuchi (komusubi Kakizoe)
Members of this senior group also appear once a day. They substitute for a member of other shimpan groups to act as head shimpan for their repeat shifts. Note: From Day 13, Fujishima is taking over for Sadogatake who's out with a torn calf muscle.
Yobidashi info
As always, predicted appearances for yobidashi are in italics.
There's 119 matches today.
From Day 13 on, schedulers will even omit certain yobidashi from the day's schedule entirely. Since this is complete and utter anarchy compared to full length days, yobidashi guessing games are over for another basho.
Yobidashi who did not appear on Day 14: Tsurutaro (sandanme rank) and Teruya (makushita rank). I expect one more to be absent today but I don't know who it'll be yet.
Yobidashi images and bios
The official program only lists yobidashi from Soichi onwards. Here's links to screencaps of each yobi, including onscreen bios in Japanese: new starter Jin, Takeru, Shintaro, Yuma, Kenta, Hiroshi, Yuji, Hiromasa, Tsurutaro, Shigejiro, Shin, Naoki, Setsuo, Yuto, Kohei, Shunsuke, Mamoru, Teruya.
