Who's that shimpan (ringside judge)?
Thanks to the maintainer of this page for providing these images! Click the name of the shimpan to see what they look like. (You may need to middle-click it to open the link in a new window.)
Today, the fourth shimpan in the list is on the mic for the pre-sekitori shifts. That said, the Tatekawa group hasn't being following their listed order since Hatachiyama began subbing for Futagoyama - they've got him sitting in the "facing" spot for all his slots - so the first we'll know for sure is when they sit down.
- "on mic" is the head shimpan (shimpancho) with their back to the audience (shomen)
- "east side" is facing the dohyo from TV screen left (higashi)
- "timekeeper" is facing us (mukojomen) on the east side of the gyoji under the red tassle (akabusa) (TV screen left)
- "facing" is facing us (mukojomen) on the west of the gyoji under the white tassle (shirobusa) (TV screen right)
- "west side" is facing the dohyo from TV screen right (nishi)
Shimpan groups
Each group below has at least one shift every day. The starter group gets the rest of the day off, while the other groups do two shifts each: the first one has everyone listed below, and the second with one of their number substituted for one of the senior group. (There's a whole rota system.)
- Kataonami group: Kataonami (sekiwake Tamakasuga), Tamagaki (komusubi Tomonohana), Azumazeki (komusubi Takamisakari), Tokitsukaze (maegashira 1 Tosayutaka), Ikazuchi (komusubi Kakizoe)
- Asakayama group: Asakayama (ozeki Kaio), Takenawa (sekiwake Tochinonada), Edagawa (maegashira 1 Aogiyama), Sendagawa (komusubi Toki) Nishonoseki (yokozuna Kisenosato)
- Tatekawa group: Tatekawa (sekiwake Tosanoumi), Hanaregoma (sekiwake Tamanoshima), Hatachiyama (komusubi Tochinohana), Oshima (sekiwake Kyokutenho), Takasago (ozeki Asasekiryu)
- Onaruto group: Onaruto (ozeki Dejima), Urakaze (maegashira 1 Shikishima), Asahiyama (sekiwake Kotonishiki), Tanigawa (sekiwake Hokutoriki), Naruto (ozeki Kotooshu)
Members of this senior group also appear once a day. They substitute for a member of other shimpan groups to act as head shimpan for their repeat shifts.
Note: From Day 13, Fujishima is taking over for Sadogatake who's out with a torn calf muscle.
Yobidashi info
As always, predicted appearances for yobidashi are in italics.
There's 122 matches scheduled for today.
From Day 13 on, schedulers will even omit certain yobidashi from the day's schedule entirely. Since this is complete and utter anarchy compared to full length days, yobidashi guessing games are over for another basho.
Yobidashi who did not appear on Day 14: Tsurutaro (sandanme rank) and Teruya (makushita rank).
Yobidashi images and bios
The official program only lists yobidashi from Soichi onwards. Here's links to screencaps of each yobi, including onscreen bios in Japanese: new starter Jin, Takeru, Shintaro, Yuma, Kenta, Hiroshi, Yuji, Hiromasa, Tsurutaro, Shigejiro, Shin, Naoki, Setsuo, Yuto, Kohei, Shunsuke, Mamoru, Teruya.
