May 2022 Grand Sumo Tournament, Day 11 (Wednesday 18 May)

(Looking for a different day? Try the master list!)

Compiled from: NSK's postings for makuuchi, juryo, makushita, sandanme, jonidan and jonokuchi; NSK's absence list, NSK's tournament leaders list and NSK's Day 11 program in Japanese.

SumoDB for today including H2H.

General knowledge: Full list of winning techniques like oshidashi, yorikiri, etc; Pre-bout rituals explained; What do the gyoji say?

Tournament leaders

Three sekitori are starting the day with a kachi-koshi!

In lower divisions, the lead scores are currently 5-0. All 17 lower division leaders are scheduled against one another today in Thunderdome matches (5-0 vs 5-0) except for Kazekeno, who's scheduled to meet 4-1 Hitoshi.

Division leaders appear in bold in their fixtures today.

Who's that shimpan (ringside judge)?

Thanks to the maintainer of this page for providing these images! Click the name of the shimpan to see what they look like. (You may need to middle-click it to open the link in a new window.)

Shimpan groups

Each group below has at least one shift every day. The starter group gets the rest of the day off, while the other groups do two shifts each: the first one has everyone listed below, and the second with one of their number substituted for one of the senior group. (There's a whole rota system.)

Members of this senior group also appear once a day. They substitute for a member of other shimpan groups to act as head shimpan for their repeat shifts.

Single shift shimpan

The whole Tatekawa group, Asahiyama, Oshima and Azumazeki only appear for one shift ringside today.

Since we only get one Azumazeki shift today, please enjoy this video of Azumazeki/Takamisakari jumping rope.

Who's head judge? (Who's sitting where?)

For the non-sekitori shifts, the judges sit in program order and cycle around the ring from day to day. The first judge listed on the program sits in head shimpan position on days 1, 6 and 11; the second judge gets to rock the mic on days 2, 7 and 12, and so on.

When the first judge is in head position, the third judge is in timekeeper position on the right hand side of the waiting gyoji. When the second judge is in head position, the fourth judge is timekeeping. When the fourth judge is up, timekeeper duties loop back to the first judge on timekeeper.

All this gives the "newest" judge a whole four days before it's their turn on mic duty, and two days before they are on timekeeper duty.

Now, for the sekitori shifts, the head judge is always the senior judge. The seating order of the non-senior judges is completely different to normal, and I haven't figured out how that alternate positioning works.

Yobidashi info

As always, predicted appearances for yobidashi are in italics.

The 8 makushita yobidashi (Shin, Naoki, Setsuo, Yuto, Kohei, Shunsuke, Mamoru and Teruya) preceding Soichi usually get four matches each. The three sandanme yobidashi Hiromasa, Tsurutaro & the sublime Shigejiro usually get 5 matches each.

We have 164 matches today, same as yesterday. My predictions went pretty well so I'll be using them again today!

The jonokuchi/jonidan yobidashi predictions on Day 11 are for newbie Jin to get 7 matches these days; Takeru, Shintaro and Yuma get 11 matches, and for Kenta, Hiroshi and Yuji in Jonidan I'll copy yesterday.

Yobidashi images and bios

The official program only lists yobidashi from Soichi onwards. Here's links to screencaps of each yobi, including onscreen bios in Japanese: new starter Jin, Takeru, Shintaro, Yuma, Kenta, Hiroshi, Yuji, Hiromasa, Tsurutaro, Shigejiro, Shin, Naoki, Setsuo, Yuto, Kohei, Shunsuke, Mamoru, Teruya.
