May 2022 Grand Sumo Tournament, Day 9

(Looking for a different day? Try the master list!)

Compiled from: NSK's postings for makuuchi, juryo, makushita, sandanme, jonidan and jonokuchi; NSK's absence list, NSK's tournament leaders list and NSK's Day 9 program in Japanese.

SumoDB for today including H2H.

General knowledge: Full list of winning techniques like oshidashi, yorikiri, etc; Pre-bout rituals explained; What do the gyoji say?

Tournament leaders

No sekitori have made it to a kachi-koshi record yet!

In all lower divisions, the winning score is currently 4-0. The schedulers are trying to thin the number of co-leaders by pitting them directly against one another with decreasing concern for their respective ranks or, in some cases, their respective divisions!

Check the NSK's tournament leaders list for the names, or scroll down to see the 4-0 contenders and thin-out matches in bold.

Who's that shimpan (ringside judge)?

Thanks to the maintainer of this page for providing these images! Click the name of the shimpan to see what they look like. (You may need to middle-click it to open the link in a new window.)

Shimpan groups

Each group below has at least one shift every day. The starter group gets the rest of the day off, while the other groups do two shifts each: the first one has everyone listed below, and the second with one of their number substituted for one of the senior group. (There's a whole rota system.)

Members of this senior group appear once a day as head shimpan. They substitute for a member of other shimpan groups.

Single appearance shimpan

On Day 9, there are but single ringside shifts from the entire Onaruto group, Tamagaki, Asakayama and Hanaregoma.

Yobidashi info

As always, predicted appearances for yobidashi are in italics.

The 8 makushita yobidashi (Shin, Naoki, Setsuo, Yuto, Kohei, Shunsuke, Mamoru and Teruya) preceding Soichi usually get four matches each. The three sandanme yobidashi Hiromasa, Tsurutaro & the sublime Shigejiro usually get 5 matches each.

For the tricky jonokuchi/jonidan yobidashi predictions on Day 9, I've given newbie Jin 5 matches; Takeru, Shintaro and Yuma get 12 matches; Kenta gets 8 matches; Hiroshi gets 7 and Yuji gets 6. This feels like a slightly low number of matches for Kenta, but everyone else's workload feels plausible. We'll see!

Yobidashi images and bios

The official program only lists yobidashi from Soichi onwards. Here's links to screencaps of each yobi, including onscreen bios in Japanese: new starter Jin, Takeru, Shintaro, Yuma, Kenta, Hiroshi, Yuji, Hiromasa, Tsurutaro, Shigejiro, Shin, Naoki, Setsuo, Yuto, Kohei, Shunsuke, Mamoru, Teruya.
