May 2022 Grand Sumo Tournament, Day 6

(Looking for a different day? Try the master list!)

Compiled from: NSK's postings for makuuchi, juryo, makushita, sandanme, jonidan and jonokuchi; NSK's absence list, NSK's tournament leaders list and NSK's Day 6 program in Japanese.

SumoDB for today including H2H.

General knowledge: Full list of winning techniques like oshidashi, yorikiri, etc; Pre-bout rituals explained; What do the gyoji say?

Tournament leaders

Edit: Kitanowaka and Onosho have gone absent from today. Ryuden gets the default win.

None of the lower-division rikishi with 3-0 scores are scheduled to bout today, and many are still sitting on 2-0 scores. Check NSK's tournament leaders list for the whole picture.

Sanyaku gyoji Kimura Tamajiro is absent!

Kimura Tamajiro normally referees the third and fourth last bouts of the day. According to this report from Yahoo! Japan, he's herniated one of the discs in his lumbar spine, and has been absent since Day 4. Wishing him all the best!

Who's that shimpan (ringside judge)?

Thanks to the maintainer of this page for providing these images! Click the name of the shimpan to see what they look like. (You may need to middle-click it to open the link in a new window.)

Shimpan groups

Each group below has at least one shift every day. The starter group gets the rest of the day off, while the other groups do two shifts each: the first one has everyone listed below, and the second with one of their number substituted for one of the senior group. (There's a whole rota system.)

Members of this senior group also appear once a day. They substitute for a member of other shimpan groups to act as head shimpan for their repeat shifts.

Single shift shimpan

Appearing for one shift today are the entire Kataonami group, Nishonoseki, Takasago and Tanigawa.

Yobidashi info

Soichi have no yobidashi listed on the Japanese program. Lower division yobidashi have their fans too, so each day I try to predict when the more junior yobidashi will appear.

Predicted appearances for yobidashi are in italics so you can tell them apart from where I've translated something from the official program.

Prior to Day 13 where the schedule starts playing funnybuggers, 32 matches usually go to the 8 makushita yobidashi Shin, Naoki, Setsuo, Yuto, Kohei, Shunsuke, Mamoru and Teruya (four matches each), and 15 matches go to the three sandanme yobidashi Hiromasa, Tsurutaro & Shigejiro (5 matches each), leaving 65 matches for the seven jonidan/jonokuchi yobis to cover at the start of the day, not counting maezumo if they're running it.

Newbie Jin is getting more matches over the course of the basho! Going off what I saw on Day 4: Jin gets 5 matches; Takeru, Shintaro and Yuma get 12 matches each; Kenta gets 10 matches; and Hiroshi & Yuji gets 7 matches each.

Since the schedulers might change things up yet again to give Jin more matches, I'm putting yobidashi predictions on separate lines from the gyoji even if they come up at the same time.

Yobidashi images and bios

The official program only lists yobidashi from Soichi onwards. Here's links to screencaps of each yobi, including onscreen bios in Japanese: new starter Jin, Takeru, Shintaro, Yuma, Kenta, Hiroshi, Yuji, Hiromasa, Tsurutaro, Shigejiro, Shin, Naoki, Setsuo, Yuto, Kohei, Shunsuke, Mamoru, Teruya.

Program of events

(9:05am) Day 6 begins

Shimpan are Kataonami (sekiwake Tamakasuga), Tamagaki (komusubi Tomonohana), Azumazeki (komusubi Takamisakari), Tokitsukaze (maegashira 1 Tosayutaka), Ikazuchi (komusubi Kakizoe)

Maezumo?

Maezumo involves bouts between rikishi without a rank, either because they're new or they fell off the rankings board due to absence. It takes place in the first week prior to Jonokuchi if it's happening at all. You're done with mae-zumo for the tournament once you reach three wins.

Maezumo competitors are not listed on the official schedule, so the first we know about their match-ups is as the yobidashi are calling them.

This tournament's maezumo cohort appears to be Machi, Yamadaumi, Izakuchido, Oyamada, Suyama, Wakaonehara, Takahashi, Imazeki, Kazuto and Aji.
