Tournament leaders

Makushita #34 Kinbozan (7-0) and Sandanme #100 Kanzaki (7-0) are Osaka 2022's championship winners in their divisions!

Makuuchi: If Kotonowaka loses, then he's out. If Takayasu and Wakatakakage win, Kotonowaka is also out. If Takayasu or Wakatakakage both win or both lose, there's a playoff - if they both lose and Kotonowaka wins, it's a three way playoff. If one leader wins and another doesn't, the winner takes the yusho.

Juryo: If Ryuden loses and Midorifuji wins, it goes to a playoff.

Jonidan and jonokuchi will both be decided by playoffs.

For convenience, I've bolded any matches which involve division title hopefuls below.

Makuuchi commentators: Uncle Waka (former yokozuna Wakanohana), play-by-play commentator is Kiyono Shigeki

Sansho prize winners

Who are those dudes in the brown jackets?

They're a sumo supporter association. From their webpage...

The East-West Association was founded in March 1937 to cooperate with the Japan Sumo Association, to encourage and promote sumo, and to contribute to the upliftment of social morality and social welfare through sumo.

The Society's main activities are as follows

  1. The members shall watch the Osaka Tournament every day.
  2. Prizes are awarded to rikishi who perform well in the above-mentioned tournaments. The details of the prizes shall be decided by the Executive Committee on a case-by-case basis.
  3. An incentive meeting for lower-ranked rikishi from the local area shall be held at each Osaka tournament.
  4. Supports student and adult sumo tournaments.
  5. Participate or cooperate in projects that contribute to social welfare.
  6. Other activities necessary to achieve the objectives of the association.

They are scheduled to present prizes to both the winner of top division and whoever gets a sansho prize.

Who's that shimpan (ringside judge)?

Thanks to the maintainer of this page for providing these images! Click the name of the shimpan to see what they look like. (You may need to middle-click it to open the link in a new window.)

Shimpan groups

Shimpan shifts

Our blankie boys have seven shifts to cover every day, and each shimpan group that's not scheduled to open the day's matches has to come back for a second shift later on. One shimpan in any returning shift gets replaced with a member of the "afternoon group". The member of the afternoon group is usually in head shimpan (shomei) position, facing away from us. The seating order doesn't always match the program order though.

When's my favourite yobidashi (usher/singer) up?

On day 15, there are 116 matches in total. Short days have a compressed schedule and some yobidashi don't show up at all.

Yobidashi ranked from jonokuchi to makushita don't appear on the schedule, and going off day 13 some yobidashi get a day off. Since this is complete and utter anarchy compared to full length days, I'm not going to guess when the yobis show up. Some things are not meant to be known.

Yobidashi images and bios

This is the normal order the yobis prior to Soichi appear in. Since we're on short days and some of them don't appear, here's links to screencaps of each yobi introducing a match, including their onscreen bios: Takeru, Shintaro, Yuma, Kenta, Hiroshi, Yuji, Hiromasa, Tsurutaro, Shigejiro, Shin, Naoki, Setsuo, Yuto, Kohei, Shunsuke, Mamoru, Teruya. (Yuji, Tsurutaro and Teruya didn't appear yesterday at all.)

Filling these in as they appear in italics.

Finding rikishi from your sister city or region

Ever wanted to cheer for rikishi in your hometown, except nobody competing in Grand Sumo is from your country and/or you're not Japanese? Japan's sister city/region relationships could be just the ticket.

Choose your country from this list, then look for your region or city. Take note of the prefecture!

If you have a whole sister region, you can use the "Place of birth" field on the official rikishi search - leave the name blank then hit search to list any "local" rikishi to cheer for!

If your city has a sister relationship with another city, use SumoDB's rikishi search - shusshin roughly translates to "place of origin". Change "Active in Basho" to 2022 Haru and "Sort multiple rikishi by" to "highest rank", then hit "Find Rikishi". Each rikishi's specific city is listed in their bio, so you'll need to click through.

Apologies in advance to anyone from Des Moines, Iowa or Lodi, California for being stuck with Ryuden.
