Who's that shimpan (ringside judge)?
Thanks to the maintainer of this page for providing these images! Click the name of the shimpan to see what they look like. (You may need to middle-click it to open the link in a new window.)
Shimpan groups
- Minato group: Minato (maegashira 2 Minatofuji), Asakayama (ozeki Kaio), Takenawa (sekiwake Tochinonada), Edagawa (maegashira 1 Aogiyama), Azumazeki (komusubi Takamisakari)
- Onaruto group: Onaruto (ozeki Dejima), Urakaze (maegashira 1 Shikishima), Nishiiwa (sekiwake Wakanosato), Asahiyama (sekiwake Kotonishiki), Takasago (ozeki Asasekiryu)
- Kokonoe group: Kokonoe (ozeki Chiyotaikai), Tatekawa (sekiwake Tosanoumi), Hanaregoma (sekiwake Tamanoshima), Futagoyama (ozeki Miyabiyama), Oshima (sekiwake Kyokutenho)

Shimpan shifts
Our blankie boys have seven shifts to cover every day, and each shimpan group that's not scheduled to open the day's matches has to come back for a second shift later on. One shimpan in any returning shift gets replaced with a member of the "afternoon group". The member of the afternoon group is usually in head shimpan (shomei) position, facing away from us. The seating order doesn't always match the program order though.
- Opening shift starts at the beginning of the day, then finishes in mid-jonidan. They disappear for the rest of the day. (Kokonoe group)
- Second shift runs from mid-jonidan to lower sandanme, then comes back after the juryo dohyoiri to cover makushita joi and all of juryo (Kataonami group with Takadagawa replacing Tokitsukaze)
- Third shift runs from lower sandanme to upper sandanme, then comes back to cover the first half of makuuchi (Minato group with Isegahama replacing Azumazeki)
- Fourth shift runs from upper sandanme to the juryo dohyoiri, then comes back to cover the second half of makuuchi (Onaruto group with Nishikido replacing Takasago)
When's my favourite yobidashi (usher/singer) up?
On day 13, there are 119 matches in total; forty less than the previous day. Short days have a compressed schedule which I haven't analysed before. :)
Yobidashi from Soichi onwards (juryo and makuuchi yobidashi) are included on the program, so we know when they'll show up. Juryo yobidashi soichi shows up for bout 67: Makushita #59 Hokutoryu (3-3) vs Sandanme #2 Rao (3-3).
On Day 13, there's 66 matches covered by yobidashi ranked from jonokuchi to makushita. I haven't looked at a schedule like this yet so I don't know how many matches each they're going to call.
Yobidashi images and bios
This is the order the yobis prior to Soichi appear in. Links go to screencaps of them introducing a match, including their onscreen bios: Takeru, Shintaro, Yuma, Kenta, Hiroshi, Yuji, Hiromasa, Tsurutaro, Shigejiro, Shin, Naoki, Setsuo, Yuto, Kohei, Shunsuke, Mamoru, Teruya.
